Nail Polish Upgraded Necklace

Hello lovelies!  Well, summer is here!  Not on the calendar, but this heat wave is more than welcome if you ask me!  We’ve been having a ton of fun here in the city, with patios and beaches and baseball games.

I love how summer makes bright colours appear, both in nature and in fashion.  And one of my favourite fashion accessories is my blue statement necklace.  If you’ve read any of my Style posts, you’ve definitely seen it before, but here it is again.img_1713202_zpsgai4cwwp

I always get compliments on this pretty necklace, and I love how awesome it looks with a cute dress or a t-shirt.  However, I’ve always wished I had a pink one – seeing as it’s my favourite colour.  So recently I broke out my favourite pink nail polish and decided to make my sweet necklace *~reversible~*.

Super simple:  I used white nail polish (Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in White On) as a base to avoid the colour bleeding through the translucent blue discs.  Then once that was dry, I used my fun pink (Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Pink Punk) to carefully cover the white.  Here’s the end result!img_1715_zps20diixua

And in case I’m feeling a bit whimsical, I can wear it blue with a pink accent teehee!img_1714_zpsm0dkycy9

Have you tried any little upcycles with nail polish?  Let me know in the comments 🙂sig_zps80d391d4

My New Favourite Foundation

Okay, ladies. This post is about a complete makeup game-changer.  I don’t use that term lightly.

I had a nice post all ready to go about my foundation routine, and how I rotate formulas with the seasons… and then it all had to be scrapped.  Because one product alone replaced it ALL.

See, my skin does this “fun” thing where it’s actually kind of translucent and so based on sleep, the weather, my circulation, and the current phase of the moon (kidding on that last one), it’ll change hue from Casper to pale with pink to pale with beige.  This has meant that I’ve had the unfortunate experience of a great foundation and concealer looking terrible on me for no real reason whatsoever, and me sporting a way-too-pale face with orange spots of concealer…. just because my skin decided to.

Enter the amazing Revlon 2-in-1 Foundation.  Oh my goodness, I cannot even begin to sing its praises enough!!  I tried it out with high hopes, since it is a higher priced drugstore foundation.  But it promises full flawless coverage and a perfect matched concealer with a nice finish.  And it delivered.  The compact package has an applicator sponge and mirror, so it’s truly all you need – no special brushes, blenders, or anything required.  With that one sponge, I applied the foundation thinly over my face, and then dabbed on a bit more on problem areas.  Then I used the tip of the sponge to apply the concealer around my eyes, and that was it!  In about a fifth of the time I’d usually spend on my face makeup alone, my face makeup was DONE.  No longer did I need foundation, eye concealer, green concealer, stick concealer, and setting powder.  One product did it all!revlon2in1_zpstijvmsv4

One of my favourite things about this product is the finish.  Although it’s a cream foundation, it dries to a beautiful satin matte that has just the right touch of light reflection to look fresh without looking oily or sweaty.  I have the foundation in Ivory, but their selection of tones is pretty good.  In the morning I like to buff it a bit with a clean powder brush just to even out the finish a bit, but it looks just as great when I don’t.  And I’ve tested it over some long days, all it needs is the occasional blot with a tissue in the late afternoon, around 4pm, and then it looks flawless again.  Even though it’s full coverage, it barely feels like wearing any foundation at all.

It’s easily my favourite addition to my makeup bag because it simplifies it and saves me so much time – I get my entire makeup look done in about half the time just by using this one foundation.

Have you tried this fantastic product?  Any awesome new finds, I’d love to hear about them!sig_zps80d391d4

Fun Spring Fashion Finds

Hello lovelies!  I hope you’ve been enjoying this gorgeous spring! Toronto has been absolutely blossoming, coming alive with flowers and patios.

With the new season and a new environment, a wardrobe refresh was in order.  I thought it would be nice to chat about a few lovely accessories that I’ve picked up for the warmer season.  They’re all in this outfit!fullsizerender_zps7e3hgwyg

Black classic flats: The day has come that I’m enamoured with flats. I’m a high heels girl through and through, but with a 20 minute walk to work, they’re hardly a wise choice. I found these pretty little black flats at Ardene. They’re cute, comfortable, and extremely versatile. They’re right here, and I highly recommend them.

A fresh ladylike purse: For busy sidewalks in the city, a purse needs to have a slim profile and be light. I really like this cute little number in a navy & white combination (ooh, nautical!) and the shape reminds me a bit of Kate Spade purses.

Chic sunnies: Very important to protect those pretty eyes, and why not do it with some cute sunglasses? This pair is American Eagle, and I was really drawn to the cat eye shape and gold trim, fun and a little bit Old Hollywood.

So there you have it, a few of my latest little fashion discoveries.

What are you freshening up your wardrobe with?   sig_zps80d391d4

The Lipstick Essentials

Hello, beauties!  I’ve got a fun one for you today – a post all about lipstick!  Ah lipstick, how we love thee.  With a single inexpensive tube, you can completely change a makeup look, the feel of an outfit, and brighten up your whole face.  It truly is like a facelift in a tube if it’s done right.  With that in mind, I figured it would be fun to write about the lipsticks that I’ve found essential to have in my makeup bag that keep my lips ready for any occasion.  If you’re a makeup enthusiast, you likely have all these and many more, and more power to you!  I tend to try and be minimalist where I can while keeping myself from being bored, so this is more basics.

1. The My Lips But Better (or MLBB for the savvy)

This is the Swiss Army Knife of lipstick – a shade that is very close to your natural lip colour.  It might be just a touch brighter, but the idea is that it looks very natural.  This truly works in every setting, and makes you instantly look polished and put together.  Because of its more demure look, this is easy to pair with very bold and graphic eye makeup.  Paired with soft neutral eye makeup, it’s my interview/first meeting look of choice.  And unless someone is staring at your lips from close range, it makes it look less like makeup and more like you simply have naturally gorgeous, enticing lips – yay!  My current one is Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss in Pink – Light.  This is a great collection because it’s super easy to match your skin tone and find a great shade that feels more like a lip balm.

20160429_lipstick4_zpsopdwqmd62. The Classic Red

Timeless, glamorous, feminine.  Red lips have been a sign of beauty for ages, and look amazing on everyone.  It might take a bit of trial and error to find the one that works best for you, since it’s best to match with your warm, cool, or neutral undertone.  However, a red lip instantly makes your face brighter, and glams up your entire look.  It’s a classic staple for dressing up, but also works beautifully with jeans and a t-shirt.  It also works wonders for your confidence and fierceness, so go ahead and face your next important meeting with a scarlet smile.  My current picks are a red lipstick from Casmara Cosmetics and Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lip Color in Forever Red (I love this one because it stays put for well over 12 hours, and I still have mine though I think the product line has been discontinued).

20160429_lipstick3_zpscyqzvi833. The Bright Pink

The alternative to the classic red.  This is a great way to have bold lipstick that stands out in a sea of red lips (a bit like wearing a bright dress in a sea of LBDs), and it’s a bit more playful and youthful than red.  Bright pink lips are my default choice on most days, and it became a bit of a signature look for me at work..  For both red and bright pink lips, I’d recommend keeping eye makeup simpler, though a clean simple cat-eye or even some subtly smoky eye makeup works really well.  Currently I’m loving Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Sultry Samba, and also Maybelline’s Baby Lips lip balm in Strike a Rose – it’s super pigmented for a lip balm.

4. The Dramatic Choice

For those days when you just want something different, something fun and wild and crazy.  Whether you go for a classic vampy bordeaux, a chocolatey brown shade (hello 90s!), or something even wilder (straight-up purple?  black?  I’ve even seen green!), this is a fun surprise for those days when you want to be a bit unexpected.  I’m very traditional in my tastes, so the wildest I’ll go is usually bordeaux.  A quick tip for when you choose dark wild lips, the color tends to minimize the size of your lips, so feel free to use a dab of lip gloss in the center, or top with a clear lip balm that has some sheen to it.  Before I went blonde, I loved Artistry Lip Colour in Ripe, but I find super dark shades look a bit heavy on me as a blonde.  So I use a dramatic lip gloss instead for the same effect.  A great choice is Artistry Light Up Lip Gloss in Glamour.

Those are my suggestions for the well-stocked makeup bag.  Of course, with something as low-commitment as lipstick, feel free to experiment with shades of red, blush pink, coral, nude, and have as much fun with it as you’d like, but for those that don’t want to spend a lot of time filling their makeup stash, these are some great basics that’ll have you all set for just about any occasion or mood.  What are some of your favourite lipsticks?sig_zps80d391d4

Coming Home

Hello friends… are we still friends?  I know it’s been so long since I’ve dropped in, or said hello.  There’s been the occasional Instagram photo and Facebook post, but that’s been about it.  And here’s why, dear friends.

The past year has been a wild and bumpy ride for me.  We moved out to the suburbs, to a quaint little place that we couldn’t really change or decorate, and I took a job where I wore a uniform daily and worked 10 hour days.  That meant no real content for home decor posts, outfit posts, or even fun recipes.  Then we decided to move back to the city.  So now, we’re back!  Back in the city, back in our neighbourhood, even back in our old building!  And that means that I’m back, and fully ready to brighten up our world with pink again!

Say it with me dolls..!:

5 Things That Made My Week

Happy Monday, darlings!  Who’s ready for a beautiful week of sun and fun?  I know I am!  In preparation for that, here are my five highlights for the past week:

  1. My new hair products:  Blonde locks means a more rigorous care regimen, so I’ve picked up some of the good stuff – John Frieda’s Sheer Blonde shampoo and conditioner.  I saw Lauren Conrad using it on a hair tutorial, and I trust her taste in blonde maintenance, so I got the Everlasting Blonde line.  I also got some John Frieda Frizz Ease serum (that’s been a classic since the 90s).  I find that I do need to heat style a bit more now, or else my natural waves end up looking a bit like a glam metal singer, and this serum has smoothed and softened my hair amazingly.
  2. Pedicures:  A little while back, Nick’s mom came to town and we had a fabulous girls day – my first ever, actually!  One of the fun activities was going for a pedicure at Nino D’Arena in Erin Mills Town Centre.  It was my first salon pedi in 10 years, and it was amazing!  I felt so pampered, and my toes left looking super pretty!  It’s been almost 2 full weeks, and my sweet little pink toenails are still looking good as new!  If you’re ever in the area, I’d highly recommend checking them out.
  3. My little Bath & Body Works treats:  Part of the shopping trip was a visit to Bath & Body Works, one of my favourite stores.  I left with a few items, including the cutest little travel hand sanitizer (in Pink Grapefruit Pop scent), as well as an amazing little hand cream for my purse, Vanilla Buttercream.  It smells and looks like frosting, and I love it!
  4. Scoop neck t-shirts:  A basic tee is always good to have on hand, and easy to make work in all occasions.  A basic scoop neck tee that’s nicely fitted is better.  I picked up a couple of these at Wal-mart (yes, really!), and have been loving styling them up and down, plus the pink colour is perfect!
  5. Luke Bryan music:  I’ve always liked country music, but recently I’ve been enjoying it a lot more – something about summertime and generally clean lyrics.  So I’ve been spinning lots of Luke Bryan this week while I’m working, doing chores around the house, and in the car, and it makes me smile.

So fun!  Go ahead, pamper yourself, and turn up some fun tunes this week!
