5 Things That Made My Week

Happy Monday, darlings!  Who’s ready for a beautiful week of sun and fun?  I know I am!  In preparation for that, here are my five highlights for the past week:

  1. My new hair products:  Blonde locks means a more rigorous care regimen, so I’ve picked up some of the good stuff – John Frieda’s Sheer Blonde shampoo and conditioner.  I saw Lauren Conrad using it on a hair tutorial, and I trust her taste in blonde maintenance, so I got the Everlasting Blonde line.  I also got some John Frieda Frizz Ease serum (that’s been a classic since the 90s).  I find that I do need to heat style a bit more now, or else my natural waves end up looking a bit like a glam metal singer, and this serum has smoothed and softened my hair amazingly.
  2. Pedicures:  A little while back, Nick’s mom came to town and we had a fabulous girls day – my first ever, actually!  One of the fun activities was going for a pedicure at Nino D’Arena in Erin Mills Town Centre.  It was my first salon pedi in 10 years, and it was amazing!  I felt so pampered, and my toes left looking super pretty!  It’s been almost 2 full weeks, and my sweet little pink toenails are still looking good as new!  If you’re ever in the area, I’d highly recommend checking them out.
  3. My little Bath & Body Works treats:  Part of the shopping trip was a visit to Bath & Body Works, one of my favourite stores.  I left with a few items, including the cutest little travel hand sanitizer (in Pink Grapefruit Pop scent), as well as an amazing little hand cream for my purse, Vanilla Buttercream.  It smells and looks like frosting, and I love it!
  4. Scoop neck t-shirts:  A basic tee is always good to have on hand, and easy to make work in all occasions.  A basic scoop neck tee that’s nicely fitted is better.  I picked up a couple of these at Wal-mart (yes, really!), and have been loving styling them up and down, plus the pink colour is perfect!
  5. Luke Bryan music:  I’ve always liked country music, but recently I’ve been enjoying it a lot more – something about summertime and generally clean lyrics.  So I’ve been spinning lots of Luke Bryan this week while I’m working, doing chores around the house, and in the car, and it makes me smile.

So fun!  Go ahead, pamper yourself, and turn up some fun tunes this week!

5 Things That Are Making My Week

Bonjour, mes belles!  Hello and welcome to another fun (and blonder) installment of 5 Things That Are Making My Week.  Here’s this week’s Top 5, starting off big with a whole new look for moi!

  1. My blonde hair!  Of course, the biggest cosmetic change of my entire life.  I’ve always wondered how I’d look as a blonde, and I LOVE it!  I think I might have been an inner blonde all along, so this is very fun right now for me, and I feel pretty!  It still feels so different, but it’s really given me a new lease on life, as well as an added boost of confidence.
  2. My shell & circle drop earrings:  I received these earrings as part of a gift set years ago.  Recently, I’ve been wearing them almost every day (I tend to repeat accessories a lot), and the slight shimmer and hint of seaside beauty feels very feminine and delicate.  It makes me think of mermaids and beach vacations.
  3. Sweet Kale Superfood Salad:  I was first introduced to this delicious salad by Nick’s mom, and it’s become a dinner staple for me at home.  Everything is prepped, chopped, and fresh, and it’s so tasty and healthy!  It’s got kale, broccoli, brussels sprouts, pumpkin seeds, a delicious dressing – in short, yum.
  4. Homemade Lavender Linen Spray:  A simple mix in a small spray bottle, (1-2 tbsp rubbing alcohol, 10 drops lavender essential oil, and then water to fill), lightly spritzed all over the sheets, pillow and blanket just before getting into bed.  It’s great for freshening up the linens, and the lavender scent is a beautiful natural relaxing scent to help with sleep.
  5. NYX Stick Blush:  I have the Tulip shade, a nice natural pink.  The blush leaves a rosy glow on my cheeks that not only lasts all day, but that I can also have control over the placement.  For lazy makeup days, I just dab a bit on my lips and I’m set 🙂

I hope you enjoy these little bullet points.  It’s been a fun, fresh week, and I’ve got a fun, fresh new look!  I’ll keep finding out if blondes have more fun, but it’s looking like they might 🙂

What’s making your summer sweet?  New foods, a new look?  I can’t wait to hear what it is for you!

5 Things That Are Making My Week

Hello and waving!  I do hope your week is going well!  We are gearing up for a road trip, and are excited about it 🙂 Here we go with this week’s installment, 5 things that are making my week, this week.

  1. My Neutral Dress Sandals:  I bought a pair of cute sandals for the wedding we attended in Mexico.  They’re sort of a nude/beige croc pattern with some metallic detailing and chunky heels, so they would look nice but be at least a bit suited to the beach just in case.  They weren’t very pricey at all, but I’ve been wearing them all the time since we got back!  They’re fun and summery, but also surprisingly comfortable as heels, so they’ve gotten lots of use this week.
  2. My Pink Gym Bag:  A little while back I bought a gym bag (somewhere along the line, grocery store tote bags just weren’t cutting it anymore for my workout stuff).  I wanted it to be cute, and found this adorable hot pink one by Nike.  It’s cute and roomy enough for all of my stuff without being gigantic, since I do take it on the bus and subway.  It’s really been making me smile this week, and just having it out makes me want to go to the gym more, so that’s definitely a plus!
  3. Virtual Fitness Classes:  Speaking of the gym, I made a fun little discovery on Monday evening.  Nick and I were at the gym, and one of my favourite classes, Sh’Bam (a dance cardio class), was scheduled for 9:30 that evening, but in virtual format.  When I went to check it out, there was almost no one else there!  A few ladies were using the studio to work out on their own, but I was the only one there for the class.  It was actually amazing, since I had almost the entire studio to myself to bust out my moves… which is exactly what I did.
  4. French Women Don’t Get Fat:  I’m rereading this old favourite, in an effort to refresh and clean up our diet.  It’s a fun read, and has already filled me with inspiration for fresh, light eating using whole, natural foods and in-season produce for easy, tasty recipes.  I’d highly recommend it for anyone that wants to read about healthy, balanced eating for life in a painless way.
  5. Bronzer:  In the summer, as I move through various shades of tan and pale, that means playing around with various combinations of foundations and bronzers.  One easy unresearched buy was Rimmel London’s Natural Bronzer, which I got in Sun Light.  It is apparently waterproof (though I’ve never tested that feature out), but it is very good.  It’s long-lasting, looks nicely even, and very very natural.  I’ve been trying for a long time to find a bronzer that doesn’t look orangey on me, and that is also matte, since shimmery face powders make me look sweaty.  This one does all of the above at a budget price, and I’m thrilled with it.

A bit of beauty, a bit of fitness, and a bit of fashion, these are what’s made my week just a little bit sweeter this time around.  Have you tried any of these, especially the classes or book?  And how have you been liking this first weekly feature?

5 Things That Are Making My Week

Here we are, near the end of another lovely summer week, and at the brink of a sweet weekend.  I hope you’ve been having a good week, lovely weather, and basking in the sunshine and warmth.  Here are a few things that have made my week better.

  1. The sights of downtown:  I find that there are two environments that speak to my heart above all others:  tropical stunning beaches, and big vibrant cities.  I’m a city girl, and draw my energy from the buzz and the lights and the gleaming smooth lines.  This week I’m once again amazed at the beautiful skyline of this great city, and the glittering gems of tall buildings that are found within.
  2. Mineral foundation: Mineral foundation has become my staple this season.  I was very skeptical of how a loose powder could ever be nearly as good as a nice cream or liquid foundation, but I have since changed my tune.  I’ve been using Artistry mineral powder foundation in Medium to work with my tan, and it’s been phenomenal!  Not only is it super-light and even, but the coverage is perfect and there’s no orangey tinge to it.
  3. Homemade breakfast sandwiches:  Ooh this has been a morning game-changer!  And believe me, you’ll be hearing more about this soon 🙂  We’ve started making hot breakfast sandwiches at home, and it’s been a fantastic addition to our mornings.  Instead of a hurried half bagel with cream cheese, or nothing at all for breakfast, one of these protein-filled satisfying sandwiches gets me off to a great start, and ensures lighter choices throughout the day, yum!
  4. Lemon scented sea salt scrub:  Every once in a while, I get really into scrubs, and right now is one of those times.  I have this lemony scented sea salt scrub from Arbonne, and I love that not only does it make my skin feel so silky and smooth, but the oils in it moisturize my whole body so deeply when I’m in the shower, I don’t even need to use body lotion after.  Once I run out, I’ll probably make my own with coarse sea salt, some sort of lightly scented oil, and essential oils for aroma.
  5. Minty lip gloss:  In the summer, I usually lighten up my eye and lip colours, and I’ve been in the mood for a lip gloss that has shine, but not glitter.  This simple clear gloss from Bath & Body Works has become a purse staple for me.  It looks great on its own or over a soft wash of lipstick, and the peppermint oil provides both cooling and mild plumping.  This was actually a winter beauty purchase, since it tastes like a candy cane, but it’s proven to be quite the perfect little item for summer as well 🙂

Interesting, it looks like this week I’ve been really into beauty and pampering!  I guess we all have those times when we want to put in just a little extra effort into our looks, and I know it always helps me feel better in my own skin.  I hope you’ve had a beautiful week thus far, and that you have a lovely weekend as well!

My Winter Essentials

Today, I’ll be sharing some of my favourite items this winter.  A few are some of my fashion staples, a few of my beauty staples, and a few items just for fun.  Here goes – my little list of wintery pleasures!

1 – My Long Leather Coat from Danier – This coat is beautiful.  I’ve had it for a few years, and it’s a gorgeous bordeaux shade of lambskin leather.  It’s lightweight, but lined with Thinsulate which makes it extremely warm.  I’m usually a peacoat girl, so this one didn’t get too much use until the extreme cold kicks in.  Once the temperature dipped way below tolerable, this has become my go-to coat in the mornings.  I love the length, which keeps me very well bundled up, and that it’s dressy enough for wearing to the office, but has a few edgy design elements.

2 – My High Heeled Biker Boots from Xelement – If you’ve seen my What I’ve Been Wearing posts, you know that these are the boots I kick on most often on my way out the door.  They’ve got the durable wear and ankle support of motorcycle boots (since that’s what they are), but also a well-designed 3.5” heel that lends itself to ladylike elegance.  The wide heel makes them amazingly comfortable to walk in, and I can easily wear these all day.  They’re also still available here.

3 – Arbonne Shea Butter Hand Lotion – This beautiful little tube is from the holiday collection, and I never leave the house without it.  I’ve found this cold winter especially drying on my hands, and this is one of the few creams that I can actually feel working and seeping into my skin in the best way.  I use it after every hand washing.

4 – Artistry Youth Extend Enriching Lotion – My skin is naturally oily, so I’m very careful about anything too rich on it.  But just a tiny dab of  this lotion on my face at night, and a small pump on my neck and decolletage in the morning and at night has been able to keep my skin soft and supple while avoiding dryness and flakiness.  It’s available here.

5 – David’s Tea Red Velvet Cake Tea & Teal Perfect Mug – I have a deep appreciation for simple things that are beautiful – a well designed lotion package, a pretty mirror, a beautifully designed candle.  The beautiful perfect mug from David’s Tea in their classic teal is one of those things – it makes me smile and feel pretty.  But inside the mug, this particular tea blend that tastes like red velvet cake and has a pretty crimson shade to it as well is amazing.  With a bit of milk or cream and some sugar, it tastes like dessert in a mug – yum!

6 – Zumba classes at the gym – I’ve recently started going to Zumba classes, and I think I’m totally sold on it!  Not only is it super fun and a great workout, it makes me feel so alive and even kind of sexy.  More than that, the fun latin-infused music makes me think of warmer climates and sunshine – I can almost pretend that I’m taking the fun dance classes poolside at a resort 🙂

How are you keeping pretty, stylish and smiling this winter?

Tips for Beating the Midwinter Blues

How have you been, friends?  I have been (oddly enough) finding joy and seeing beauty even in the less than awesome winter weather.  My soul was made for warm weather and tropical breezes, so I tire of winter very quickly, usually by December 26th.  The fact that I am finding joy and not feeling miserable when I look out the window or step out is a miracle!  Of course, the wonderful jolt of pink and red that is Valentine’s Day does help with this.  However, if you are feeling the winter blues creep in, I’ve got a few tips that might help put a smile on your face.

1 – Get outside.

I know, this can be completely counterintuitive.  And honestly, when it’s grey and miserable out (or extremely cold, as it sometimes gets here in Toronto), this can be the last thing you want to do.  However, a dose of fresh air will always help lift your spirits – and if you look, you might be able to see beauty even in the dreariest day.  Perhaps it’s the snow sitting on the pine trees like icing, making the world look like a snowglobe.  Maybe it’s cute little pawprints along the sidewalk.  Sometimes, I just pop out on our balcony and look at the rooftops of houses, and how with snow on top, it looks like a sleep gingerbread village.  And of course, if it happens to be a sunny day, few skies look as brilliantly blue as those contrasted with sparkling white snow.

2 – Cozy up with a hot drink

Tis the season!  Break out the hot chocolate, or hot apple cider.  Why not throw together a hot toddy or peppermint mocha?  Or a delicious cozy cup of tea?  It’ll warm you up from inside, and this is such a simple and pure pleasure, it’s sure to brighten your day, especially if you use a pretty mug that makes you smile.  As you drink it, try to focus on the simple sensual elements of the experience – watch the liquid swirl in the mug and the steam rise, inhale the delicious aroma – it almost becomes a meditative experience.

3 – Bring in some brights

Sometimes, in the midst of all they grey and white and slush, what we really need is a pop of bright colour.  It feels like a green juice for your visual palette.  So go ahead and beckon to spring and renewal this way – paint your nails a bright fuschia pink, make yourself a green juice, add pops of vibrant colours to your look.  One of my favourite pieces is my blue and silver loop necklace.  Its gorgeous turquoise hue reminds me of tropical beaches, and the colour brightens up my whole look.  Another easy favourite – slick on some bright pink lipstick or lip gloss.  It’s like a facelift in a tube!

4 – Embrace cozy styles

You know how by the end of summer, it seems everyone can’t wait to get back to sweater weather and leather jackets and pumpkin spice lattes?  Well we’re in that right now, so enjoy it!  Wrap yourself in soft sweaters, load on the scarves, toss on a sweater dress and tights.  Before you know it, we’ll be back in the heat when we’ll be trying to wear as little as socially acceptable to keep cool, so enjoy piling on the layers now and rock your cute Pinterest outfits!

I hope this helps.  There really is fun and beauty to be enjoyed in every season, and I often think of winter as wrapping myself in a cocoon, luxuriating in warmth, coziness, and comfort before the spring unveils new wonders and experiences ahead.  So today when I sip my hot chocolate wearing my fuzzy pjs, I’ll be sending warm thoughts your way.

Elsa Inspired Makeup for the Real World

Today, I’m here to talk makeup.  Specifically, an easy makeup look inspired by everyone’s favourite Snow Queen – Elsa!  I really like this look for a few reasons.  It’s very quick and easy, so perfect for a busy morning, but still has a nice dose of colour, for the days when you might not want to use all neutrals.  Being January, it’s a nice refreshing palette after all the red and green, and let’s face it – Toronto has frozen over like Arendelle this week, so at least it matches the weather!

Here’s how I put this all together:

  1. Foundation, concealer, and setting powder as normal (I’m currently using NYX BB Cream in Nude, Rimmel’s Hide the Blemish in Neutralizer, and CoverFX’s SettingFX powder for light skin tones).
  2. Gently swirl a rosy, almost candy pink blush onto cheekbones (my pick here – Artistry Cheek Colour in Pink Passion).
  3. Eyes – this is the most intricate step, but still simple.  Use a white or pearly shade to highlight the brow bone and inner corner of your eyes, followed by a light nude shade on the rest of the eyelid above the crease.  Then use a pastel pink shade right on the crease.  Apply a rich blue from the lashline to just below the crease.  Blend the colours gently into a seamless look.  (Colours used here in order of application – Artistry Eye Colour in Starry Night, Bone, Charm, and Capri).  Apply 1 or 2 generous coats of mascara to upper lashes (here, I used Artistry’s Signature Eyes Volume Mascara).
  4. For lips, choose a soft pink lipstick or gloss.  Here I’ve used a custom blended pink lipstick, and Artistry’s Light Up Lip Gloss in Glitz.

And that’s it!  I would suggest wearing icy hues of clothing as well.  This was a look I did for our ice skating date, so I wore an almost Tiffany-blue sweater, a shade that’s actually pretty close to Elsa’s dress.  Of course white and black would work well with this look, as would a cool pink or even purple!

What sorts of fun makeup looks have you been creating?  Do you like to vary your colours with the seasons, or opt for a similar palette year-round?
